What can I hang my bird feeder on

Random objects in your yard can be used to hang bird feeders, that is if it remains safe and secure, while allowing the bird feeder to be well off the ground.

What to hang a bird feeder on will be a strong, mature tree branch or a crevice or cranny on the trunk, where the feeder will be seen to lean rather than hang. To hang a bird feeder without a tree, try a low level gutter or a bracket used for flower pots. What is the best way to hang a bird feeder is on a bird feeder pole.

What to hang a bird feeder on will come to you in most yards, with an area that remains isolated, undisturbed with no movement - yet the birds remain safe at all times.

How you hang a bird feeder must follow strict rules for doing so, with a bird feeder hung 4-6 off the ground - with shade certain to sustain wild bird food longer than an extended time hanging up in direct sun.

Where you hang the bird feeder relies on your backyard environment, with an opportunity to hang in a tree a great option, whereas no tree in the yard can make it a fun task to experiment with.

Most common backyard birds will take to the same location without issues, which means where you hang a finch feeder will be suitable for most others.

Not all wild birds will feed off a bird feeder hung up in places I've mentioned, with hummingbirds unlikely to share a feeding area with other bird species.

Hummingbirds must be on their own, so where to hang a hummingbird feeder can be on a bird feeder pole out in the open - whilst remaining in the sun with shade still a priority.

Best way to hang a bird feeder is with its default hook for hanging, and if this hook or loop is too small - a hanger or chain can be used to give you that extra length.

Mature tree branch

I believe to hang a bird feeder on the branch of a strong, mature tree branch is going to be the most effective place for birds to feed.

Birds love the cover of a tree with a bird feeder hung up among the leafs to be great cover - as they can eat on their own yet disappear as soon as they are disturbed.

What kind of birds will feed off a bird feeder in a tree is all of them really, bar the hummingbird or oriole in most cases. No bracket or hook of any kind is needed - the tree is your oyster - with an abundance of available yet natural hanging sites.

How you would hang a finch sock is within a tree as finches are more acceptable to tree cover than a bird feeder hanging up on a pole, though will be happy to still.

Where to hook the bird feeder of any kind on a tree branch is on its strongest part, with the branch nearest to the tree trunk being the safest area.

Any regular bird feeder for suet can be hung in a tree with use of a chain or an extended hook - as its compatible with a wire bird feeder for nuts, tube feeders for seed mixes or open dishes for all of the above bird feed.

Chains or a long hook can allow an otherwise restricted bird feeder made with a too small loop for hanging - can now be hung over any thickness of branches.

Stub or crevice on tree

Not all of you will have a tree to which there's options I'll soon get into later, but those of you who do have a mature tree to use, may find branches too far off the ground.

What you can do is setup a pulley system to hang a bird feeder high up in a tree, with only a pull of the rope to bring it down within reach, while pulling it back up to avoid bears or other common backyard pests.

What you may not of realized with your tree is the trunk will have many nooks and crevices, to which a bird feeder can be hung.

Now of course a far reaching branch can allow a proper hang, with a crevice in a tree trunk the feeder can still hang. Difference being the hang will be pushed flush up against the tree trunk - with the bird feeder seen to lean.

Not a problem I can assure you as it can be a solid way 'of sort of' hanging a bird feeder, with the issue of it swinging in the wind avoided - or being limited to few birds that can get to grips with a hanging bird feeder, is now open to all.

Feeders hung off a trunk nook are solid as a rock with no movement at all; thus your regular visitors can use it whilst made compatible with non bird feeder birds in the yard.

Woodpeckers in particular will love a peanut wire bird feeder secured onto a trunk with the stabilization benefiting them hugely.

Replace hanging flower pot

What better way than making use of an unused bracket mounted to a fence post or wall in your yard, than with a much used bird feeder.

It is possible to replace a hanging flower pot with a bird feeder that hangs. No additional extras are needed, as the bird feeders hook for hanging will simply slide over the easy slot on the bracket.

Now a hanging flower or plant pot may be just what you need, though where its positioned and how high off the ground the bracket is mounted can be an issued.

Regardless, if the bird feeder allows any of your bird feeders to stay well above 4 feet off the ground, you'll be in safe hands.

On the other hand, below this height then the bracket must be removed, then screwed back on the wall or post again up to the recommended height - to which will be between 4-6 feet off the ground.

Keep your flower basket intact if you can as its possible an higher up flower bracket, and therefore the flower basket itself - can be used to hang a bird feeder underneath it.

Bonus being any insect attracting flowers will in turn attract insect eating birds to the flowers, and hopefully end in them eating off the bird feeder.

Pole with bracket

Safest way you can hang a bird feeder of any kind is on a reliable yet super strong metal bird feeder pole, of the bird feeding station or Shepherd's hook type.

Bird feeder poles are cheap, easy to assemble and quickly put up in the yard.

Where to place a bird feeder is to centralize it on the yard or over to the boundary beside the fence - where there's natural cover - of which only a bird feeder pole with one or multiple brackets can provide you this kind of flexibility.

You might find the ideal spot in your backyard to hang a bird feeder, yet won't be made possible unless there's a bracket it can be hung off.

I say go for a bird feeding station with a minimum of four brackets for hanging, as this provides you the option to upgrade with additional bird feeders later - whilst giving you the chance to use all kinds of bird feeders for nuts, seeds or suet.

What is great about using a bird feeding station pole is the area you impale the pole into the ground originally may not be suitable later... if its seen to be in too much sunshine or out of sight of birds.

You'd simply pull up the bird feeder pole to re-position it in a more desirable location when the time comes later.

Accessible low guttering

What other way is there to hang a bird feeder if you don't have a tree in your yard, or indeed any kind of bird feeder pole or bracket to use at this time.

That's right you can turn to the abundance of guttering that can be available on your property. You could even be sneaky by hanging a bird feeder off a gutter that is overhanging into your properly line, while belonging to a neighbor.

It is safe too hang bird feeders off a gutter if the gutter is in great condition with no signs of corrosion.

Bird feeders can become heavy when fully loaded up with seed mixes or nuts, thus a gutter showing signs of old age will collapse on you - its not matter of if, but a matter of when it happens.

What can be worse is if this guttering gives way while wild birds are feeding.

Never hang a bird feeder off a gutter if its old with cracks, with a gutter in great condition or is brand new must still be used with one bird feeder at a time.

Hang any one bird feeder off the part in the corner where its strongest - or if you must hang the feeder in the middle of the gutter - do so by only filling it up a third of the way to keep it light.

While you can gain access up near the gutter, it may be possible to hang a bird feeder from the eaves. Its not a quick task either as you'd need to screw in a hook or bracket so there's something it can hang off.

Don't hang bird feeders off a second-story house or building, while a single floor home or shed gutter must be used only for your personal safety.

Hook drilled into fence post

Once again what you can hang a bird feeder on can be something that requires no investment on your part, with accessories you may have to hand.

Of course for this you'd need a fence in your yard to hang a bird feeder off.

Its simple, screw in a bracket or some kind of small hook into your wooden fence to hang the bird feeder off.

I will say its similar to hooking on a bird feeder off a tree trunk crevice as a bird feeder won't hang if hooked over a screw - as there's no distance between the fence.

What will happen is the bird feeder hook will loop onto the screw that is positioned horizontally or vertically, so therefore can only lead to the bird feeder leaning over while being pushed up against the fence post.

Not a problem of course because this none hanging bird feeder is more stable on a fence, and therefore more inviting to birds who can take advantage of the fence location.

Never attempt to mount or bracket or screw in a hook for hanging on the actual fence panel. To hang a bird feeder off a fence position it must be the fence post only, as its the strongest point while taking on screws, or nails without failing.

Conclusion

What you can hang a bird feeder on is a mature tree branch if you have a suitable tree, or even a hedgerow in your yard will still work.

Where you hang the bird feeder is on the part of the branch nearest too the tree trunk, as its the strongest part of any branch.

To hang a bird feeder with branches far too high off the ground there may happen to be a crevice or cranny where a bird feeder can be hooked over. It won't be a noticeable crevice but if it can be used to hang - the feeder will be seen to lean and not hang.

Bonus of this is the feeder is now more stable, as birds will appreciate a secure feeder.

When no tree is available to you rest assured you'll have many other opportunities in your yard, before you are forced to splash the cash.

You can replace a hanging flower basket with a bird feeder, to make use of bracket that is not getting much use with withering or dead flowers or plants.

Replace the flower pot with the bird feeder, or if the hanging flower basket is high enough, simply use the basket to hang the feeder, so its quick and simple.

If no hanging flower plant pot basket is available to you there's always the guttering on the house, or perhaps on the shed.

Now I will say the guttering must be in good shape whilst being within reach of you as you'd need to clean the bird feeders once or twice a week, while replacing the bird feed before it goes bad.

All these opportunities to hang a bird feeder on may still not be within reach, thus a little money must be spend.

Simply buy a bird feeding station pole to hang multiple bird feeders anywhere above the lawn - or use a Shepherd's hook to hang a single bird feeder.
