How tall should bird baths be
Certainly a taller bird bath can be more appealing in the yard, whereas a ground bird bath is used by more species, but more importantly do make sure it can be found.
How tall should bird baths be is thankfully not as important as how high a bird feeder needs to be. Benefits to a bird bath water bowl located higher off the ground is real, as its less prone to debris or grime landing in the water. Whereas a bird bath lower to the ground can open it up to more backyard bird species.
Height of a bird bath doesn't matter as much as a bird feeder, but there should be benefits to be had the higher it is situated off the ground.
What is more important to know is certain bird species prefer, or are only capable of drinking or bathing near to the ground, so a ground level bird bath can be considered for this reason alone.
Height of ground level bird baths is a benefit to them but certainly more prone to getting dirty sooner - be it the bird bath itself or the water deteriorating quicker.
If going for a bird bath on a stand, then this is great because only you will know you receive visits to your yard from mostly smaller bird species, whereas a 2 to 3ft. bird bath is acceptable.
When using a bird bath that must be suspended off a tree branch or bracket, then up to 5 to 6 feet off the ground is sufficient enough along with the bird feeders; but remember the water bowl is smaller, thus restricted to smaller, lightweight common birds only.
No real height requirement needed for a bird bath, as it really depends on your needs and the needs of the kind of birds that frequent your yard.
How to attract birds to your yard is via a bird feeder, only then can a bird bath be used but only if its always visible.
Bird baths must always be within reach to carry out daily or twice to three times a week cleaning and maintenance - along with removing debris from floating on the water.
No height requirement
When it comes to supplying a water source for our backyards birds within the confines of a decorative yet practical bird bath, average height requirement is not an issue at all.
That's right, how tall should a bird bath be can depend completely on your needs.
What issues can arise regarding how much debris or grime that can land in the bird bath, and so too float on the water can have its say on how high a bird bath should be.
Standard bird baths on a stand can be more useful for avoiding debris that can be blown on to a shorter bird bath, while a hanging bird bath up to 6 feet high can avoid this issue all together.
Certainly benefits to a taller bird bath but most people will experience the issue of unwanted debris and muck landing in the fresh water.
For this reason you'd need to clean out your bird bath three to four times a week, whether its a bird bath on a pedestal or a ground bird bath.
Up to 2 to 3ft. on stand
If you were indeed to go for a traditional ornamental backyard bird bath on a stand, or what would be a pedestal, this can heighten the bird bath up to 2 to 3 feet in total.
Make it a pedestal bird bath as this given height would be the default measurements.
How tall should bird baths on a stand can be lower to which would compliment the yard, whereas a taller bird bath can have issues of its own.
Bird baths on a stand often are made with a rounded base with a corresponding pedestal.
What this can relate to is balance, whereas the higher the bird bath is, the harder it is to keep standing in the wind. To which I would make sure you are able to insert pegs in the base, to prevent the bird bath tipping over in the littlest of wind.
Bird baths always come with a bowl mounted to the top, to hold the water - but its this that would create balancing issues - so do take extra care when buying a taller bird bath.
Other options are made available to you that can avoid the problem of balancing in wind.
Height still applies to ground baths
To overcome the daily issue of keeping your bird bath standing in tiny amount of wind, you can indeed revert to a ground level bird bath to situate on the deck or patio.
To seriously consider the use of a ground level bird bath, one would need to know only ground feeding birds are capable of using it.
For this reason, the height of a ground level bird bath doesn't matter as much, but ground bird baths mustn't be obstructed in anyway as ground feeding birds that use it tend to be big bigger, bulkier bird species.
Ground bird baths are positioned so low they can indeed have issues of their own.
Among them is debris, grime or grit off the ground can easily flow into a bird bath sitting so low to the ground, whereas a taller bird bath avoids most of it all together.
Only supply a ground level bird bath, or indeed an addition to a bird bath on a stand knowing mostly ground feeding birds belonging to Blackbirds, Jays, Grackles and the smaller Robins or Bluebirds, would be prepared to use it.
Not all birds are capable of feeding off a hanging bird feeder, as a more compact bird bath can be made hard to drink out of, let alone offering enough room to bathe.
Keep it within reach
It can depend then on what type of bird bath you wish to use to compliment the decor of your yard, but the taller it is can certainly have its benefits.
Benefits being keeping more grime and debris out of the water with a higher up location, but so to can it keep other wildlife, predators or nuisance backyard visitors out of it. Unfortunately, not much can be done to keep algae and general grime out of tall bird baths, as this will comes naturally in time.
Last thing you want to do is offer a reliable source of fresh water to animals that indeed deter backyard birds.
How tall should bird baths be is always within reach, but thankfully most bird baths designed to be situated on the ground can be easily attended to as you lean over to clean, maintain or replenish with water.
Ground bird baths are useful for people with more ground feeding birds over bird species that prefer to eat from an elevated point - so a bird bath on the ground is sure to cater to them only.
If you have back issues or indeed unable to bend over, then a ground level bird bath is not for you.
Summary
Unlike the need to situate a bird feeder at a correct, safe height, no height requirement is needed for any type of bird bath.
Be it a bird bath situated high up off the ground can be more beneficial as it tends to keep more dirt out of the water, with only the base of the bird bath changing in color due to weathering.
To buy a bird bath on a stand, by default it would always be between 2 to 3 feet high, with the base and water bowl on top included.
Whereas, a ground level bird bath can have its benefits when only attracting ground feeding capable birds, who would be seen less attempting to land on a delicate, unlevel bird bath on a pedestal.
Ground bird baths can be more prone to being hit with more grime and debris at ground level, but certainly opens up a way for birds to drink and bathe to all species.
Regardless of how high a bird bath should be, just be sure you are within reach of it.
Bird baths must be kept clean and be maintained to keep out leafs and things floating on the water, and of course would need to be replenished with fresh water, daily if you can.
If the bird bath is too tall then people often abandon their responsibilities of taking care of a bird bath - so keep the bath within reach so you can keep it clean and tidy.
