Are raw peanuts bad for birds
Peanuts labeled as raw aren't bad at all, in fact they are simply uncooked, de-shelled or shell peanuts that are labeled as 'peanuts for wild birds' you can buy everywhere.
Raw peanuts are essentially are dried peanuts that both main moisture, and provided in and out of their shell. Which is exactly the same peanuts we feed to wild birds, in or out of our bird feeders. Raw peanuts are incredibly healthy for wild birds, which are high in fat and calories to help keep birds energy up.
What exactly is raw peanuts? Well, its simply peanuts that are dug out of the ground while still in their shell state.
Harvested peanuts are washed to clear off the dirt, and will then be stored away in a cool, dry place. Its only then a matter of time before producers pack the raw peanuts for consumption by people, or our wild bird.
You see, no special ingredients or washes go in to harvested peanuts, as they're practically ready to be eaten straight out of the ground.
Nothing is done to make peanuts safe to eat nor can you as raw peanuts are available both in and out of their shell.
Plain peanuts provide the right amount of fat content with the protein being very good for our wild birds. Benefits to wild birds will ensure lots of energy in the winter, which is especially important when birds use up more energy to forage for scarce natural food.
While peanuts out of their shell can be roasted or flavors added, only this type of peanut is bad for birds, as it will contain a large amount of toxic salt.
With no such thing as cooking bacteria or poisonous substance out of raw peanuts, just hand over peanuts to wild birds with no time to waste.
One way raw peanuts can be changed in to something a little more unconventional for wild birds - is when we feed peanut butter to wild birds which is good for them - thus this food type will still avoid large amounts of salt content being ingested by birds.
Raw peanuts fed to birds regularly
What you must understand about raw peanuts is that they are exactly that. No roasting or flavoring is undertaken, which means they are plain, flavorless and extremely boring.
Just as all the nuts you can feed wild birds should be, with both flavors and toppings adding which include unsafe ingredients that are toxic to our wild birds.
Raw peanuts are 100% the exact same peanuts we can buy to feed our wild birds.
Peanuts that are considered raw are sold in bulk and will go in bird feeders. While out of shell peanuts are commonly fed to wild birds, the in-shell peanuts are often eaten by people at Christmas - so what's good for people is great for birds in this case.
And there you have it, wild birds can eat these kinds of peanuts as they're the exact type of nuts sold as wild bird peanuts.
More so, what you consider to be raw peanuts aren't really so, as any roasting or blanching to roast peanuts, is optional for people but not needed to make them safe.
Avoids additional ingredients
What you get with raw peanuts, which is the same kind used to feed wild birds, is that there's no way they have additional ingredients added.
Additional ingredients can include special flavors like sweet chili or dusted roasted flavors, or peanuts could have a crispy shell we like to eat as a snack.
Birds who eat any of these special flavors will end up being poisoned. Salt is extremely toxic to our wild birds and if fed on a large amount of salted peanuts - with salt added to the flavoring - it won't end well for your backyard birds.
Naturally roasted peanuts cooked in the oven can be fed to wild birds which mustn't be blanched prior in salted water, are safe to feed wild birds. What we buy in-store, is usually roasted with a dusting of flavoring, which is mostly made up of toxic salt.
With that, it wouldn't be safe to feed store-bought roasted peanuts to squirrels or other wild life either, as salt is unhealthy for all.
Raw peanuts bought especially as wild bird nuts, or a pack of peanuts you can buy in their shells at a reasonable price, will be safe to feed wild birds, even if it isn't sold or promoted as wild bird peanuts.
Wild bird nuts, are raw peanuts
Like I've said what are raw nuts are not just similar to wild bird peanuts, they are the exact same thing, 100% the same.
Raw peanuts aren't really referred to that are all, as any peanut ready to eat without salt or roasted prior are just called peanuts.
Peanuts that are plucked from out of the ground while still in their seeds, will be cleaned up and then sold to people and packaged for wild birds. No special ingredients and, or cooking prior to selling them is needed - raw peanuts dug out of the ground are safe to eat right away, and will have a tasty nutty flavor and a lovely texture.
Raw peanuts can never be bad for our wild birds as its practically what all nut-eating birds eat out of peanut bird feeders, or when fed to them on the ground.
Blue Jays can be seen to take these same peanuts away to store away for another time; while being quite intent on eating peanuts in or out of their shells, which can depend on if Blue Jays can stick around for a while, or they must rush off in a hurry.
While you'll find Nuthatches especially feeding on what you consider to be raw peanuts, so to will Chickadees, many Woodpeckers of course, Wrens, Titmouse, Sparrows and more common bird feeder birds, who eat out of suspended bird feeders.
Other wild birds who will eat peanuts in their shells can include Woodpeckers, Chickadees, Grackles and Nuthatches.
Conclude
What you might call raw peanuts can actually just be labeled wild bird peanuts, which is safe, unsalted, not roasted peanuts that can be fed to birds in and out of their shells.
Raw peanuts are basically peanuts dug out of the ground then quickly packaged to be sold to us, and re-labeled again to be sold as peanuts for wild birds.
No preparation, roasting or special flavors go in to raw peanuts, they are simply left in their shells and sold. Same peanuts can be removed out of their shells which then become a health-store like peanuts with low fat.
Regardless, raw peanuts are high in fat and calories and provide protein which contributes to keeping wild birds full of energy.
Nut-eating birds like Blue Jays to Chickadees will eat raw peanuts in or out of peanut bird feeders, or when we sometimes feed these same birds raw peanuts still in the shells.
I don't think calling them raw peanuts is the right wording, I would just call them peanuts in and out of their shells - just as we refer to salted peanuts or roasted peanuts.
You see then raw peanuts are 100% the same peanuts that are fed to wild birds already, and the same peanuts that go in peanut bird feeders in our yards.
